CARRABASSETT VALLEY — A snow-maker at Sugarloaf recently received serious injuries when a pressurized valve stem blew off and hit him in the face, a spokesman for the ski area said.

The unidentified 20-year-old worker was opening a pressurized water hydrant at about 2 a.m. Friday, Jan. 23, on the Widowmaker Trail when the valve stem blew off, Ethan Austin, Sugarloaf spokesman, said.

The worker was taken down the mountain in a snowcat, driven in an ambulance to Kingfield and flown to a Lewiston hospital in a helicopter. He was later transported to Boston, Austin said.

Austin said the last update was the man is out of the hospital and expected to make a full recovery.

Sugarloaf is still investigating the cause of the accident, he said.
