LEWISTON — Lewiston firefighters put out an industrial fire in a machine at Elmet Technologies on outer Lisbon Street on Saturday night.

“Everybody’s OK,” fire Capt. Rick Cailler said.

Lewiston firefighters arrived around 9 p.m. after a fire alarm went off.

“On arrival, we were told there was an incident with a machine that was being purged with hydrogen gas that was on fire. It set off the sprinklers,” Cailler said. “Our crew went in and extinguished the fire and shut off the fuel to the machine. Right now, that section of the building is down.”

The building had elevated levels of carbon monoxide and was evacuated, Cailler said. Five units responded.

The fire was contained to inside the building. “There were flames,” Cailler said. “It’s a big, open area.”

Elmet Technologies makes specialty lighting. It works with molybdenum and tungsten metals for lighting, semiconductor, medical and energy industries.

It’s not a good place for a fire, Cailler said. “It’s a scary place. It turned out well.”

Cailler didn’t know the amount of financial loss to the company. “One machine is ruined,” he said.

That section of Lisbon Street was closed during the fire.
