FARMINGTON — Depth and quality lifted Mt. Blue and Mountain Valley to conference Alpine titles in the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference and Mountain Valley Conference ski championships at Titcomb Mountain on Saturday.

Mt. Blue placed three skiers in the top six in Saturday’s slalom race to claim the boys’ overall Alpine KVAC title, while Mountain Valley landed four in the top five to finish first in the MVC. Camden Hills outdistanced Edward Little to claim the girls Alpine title in the KVAC and Mt. Abram pocketed the girls MVC championship.

“We skied conservative on the first run,” Mt. Blue coach Mark Cyr said. “I told the kids in between runs that we should open up a little and see how we could do.”

The end result left Mt. Blue owning a 45-126 overall lead over second place Maranacook.

Mitchell Haines paced the Cougars’ effort, finishing third in one minute 14.75 seconds. Skowhegan’s Mike Miller won the slalom event in 1:10.25. Joining Haines on the podium for Mt. Blue were Dylan Roberts (fifth), Anthony Franchetti (sixth) and Miles Pelletier (12th).

“Our philosophy has been the same all season, not every guy has to get on the podium, if you put four in the top 10 no one can touch you, especially with the depth we have,” Franchetti said. “So, we skied to stand up and skied strong to put guys where they needed to be.”

Spruce Mountain’s Stephen Sylvester turned in a powerful race, finishing fourth in the KVAC.

Nick Newman led the Mountain Valley title chase finishing in first place in the MVC slalom race in 1:12.36. Teammates Andrew Arsenault (third), Nate Leger (fourth) and Jared Arsenault (fifth) nearly made it a clean sweep for the Falcons. Mt. Abram’s Jed Stevens broke up the bid, crossing the finish line in second place.

“I didn’t have a very good first run and after talking to a few skiers, they said they were pushing it a lot more on the top,” Newman said. “So I just came firing out of the gate on my second run. I felt more comfortable and felt like I skied my race.”

In the girls KVAC championships, Camden Hills raced past Edward Little, 91-121 to win the overall Alpine title. Edward Little won the slalom title Saturday, but Camden Hills commanded a big advantage after giant slalom races Wednesday at Black Mountain.

“It’s been a steady progression for us,” Camden Hills coach Ryan Hurley said. “We have an unbelievable feeder program all the way up through along with some very talented athletes in the girls’ high school program.”

Brooke Lever paved the way for the Red Eddies in the slalom race, finishing second to Maranacook’s Erin Guilmet. Lever found trouble at the top of the course on her second run but managed to finish less than three second behind Guilmet in the standings.

“This day has been kind of crazy for me, the first run I didn’t have any problem but my time wasn’t fast,” Lever said. “So I went to the top and tried to focus on attacking the course and remembering it but I made a couple of mistakes on the course and it takes two runs in a ski meet.”

Mt. Abram was awarded the girls’ overall Alpine title in the MVC with just three skiers racing. Teams must have four members to score. No teams in the conference meant the criteria, but Mt. Abram and Telstar had three skiers each. Telstar owned a one-point advantage after the GS competition Wednesday, but the Roadrunners claimed the overall championship winning Saturday’s slalom race 17-22.

Kenzie Tyler (fourth), Emma Berube (fifth) and Denesha Begin (eighth) led the Roadrunners in the slalom race.
