The National Weather Service in Gray is looking for a few good men. A few good women, too, or anybody who can observe the weather and report on what it’s doing.
With the latest storm expected to blow across the region Saturday and Sunday, the weather service was asking people to post updates on their Facebook pages. Why? Because input from unofficial observers helps to round out the information the NWS provides to the public at large.
Besides, can you ever get enough snow photos? Send them to the NWS Facebook page at: facebook.com/NWSGray. When you’re not shoveling, plowing and complaining, that is.
The National Weather Service issued a blizzard warning for all of eastern Massachusetts and coastal areas of Maine and New Hampshire ahead of a storm expected to intensify Saturday night and last into Sunday.
While the latest storm isn’t expected to bring much more than a foot of snow to the area, it’s forecast to be miserable in all sorts of ways. Shrieking winds, white-out conditions and cold down to zero and below.
Officials warned that hurricane-force wind gusts could lead to power outages. In response, Central Maine Power announced that its fleet is ready to roll at the first sign of falling tree limbs and snapping lines.
“We’ve put our storm response plan into motion; continue to watch the forecast; and are getting crews, equipment, and materials in place,” said CMP spokeswoman Gail Rice. “The snow is expected to be dry and less likely to coat tree limbs and wires, so high winds and slippery roads are likely to be the primary cause of any outages.”
Meanwhile, a slew of weekend sports, festivals and other events were canceled ahead of the storm:

CMP urges customers to take precautions
Central Maine Power Company is alerting customers to take precautions before the blizzard hits. Before a storm strikes:
· Keep battery-operated flashlights and radios on hand, along with supplies of drinking water and nonperishable foods.
· Make sure that smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices are fully charged.
· Fill your car’s fuel tank.
During a power interruption:
· To report a power interruption, contact CMP at (800) 696-1000.
· When using an emergency heating source, like a wood stove, fireplace or kerosene heater, keep fuels away from the flames and be sure to ventilate properly.
· Never use grills or camp stoves indoors; they can give off dangerous gases.
· Keep refrigerators and freezers closed as much as possible. Most food will last 24 hours or longer if you minimize the opening of refrigerator and freezer doors.
For customers with generators:
· Hire a licensed electrician to install permanent generators and transfer switches.
· Properly ground all portable generators.
· Carefully read and observe all instructions in your generator’s operating manual.
· Never run a generator indoors — even in an open garage.
· If your carbon monoxide detector goes off, get out of the building immediately and call 911.
· Do not store fuel indoors or try to refuel a generator while it’s running.
· Refer to CMP’s Web page on generator safety: www.cmpco.com/UsageAndSafety/electricalsafety/GeneratorSafety/default.html.
