AUBURN — A country music concert got its final yes from the Auburn City Council on Tuesday night.
Councilors voted 4-1 to let promoters Mike Shea and Dean Staffieri serve alcohol in a roped-off area at the Auburn-Lewiston Municipal Airport in July.
Only Councilor Tizz Crowley objected, saying she had safety concerns about the proposal.
“We, as a council, have a history of approving incomplete applications,” Crowley said. “It worries me that there are significant safety issues. I understand why this was moved forward, but I do not see enough language for the cost of police enforcement.”
The promoters plan to bring a “Class A” country performer to Lewiston-Auburn in late July or early August. The concert is expected to draw between 7,500 and 14,000 people and the ability to sell beer is a big part of their financial plans.
It is sponsored by L/A Harley-Davidson and radio station 99.9 The Wolf.
Councilors are requiring the promoters to work with Auburn to make sure alcohol stays out of the hands of anyone younger then 21. The promoters would agree to pay a $100 fine for each drinking violation at the event.
The festival is tentatively set for either July 25, July 26 or Aug. 1 and 2 on airport property east of the runways and south of Constellation Drive. Parking and staging would be north of Constellation Drive.
