FRYEBURG — Falmouth reigned supreme Wednesday in the Class A Nordic state meet at Stark’s Hill, but there were splashes of Leavitt green and Mt. Blue near the top of the leaderboard.

The Leavitt boys placed second in the freestyle race, finishing 12 points behind Falmouth. The Hornets finished with 64 points, accumulating 33 points Wedneday as they had three of the top seven finishers.

“We’ve been doing some fantastic training all season long, focusing on this week and the past week really fine-tuning and gearing up for these two days,” Leavitt coach Dustin Williamson said. “Everything came today and it’s a great two days.”

Harrison Knowlton led the way for Leavitt with a second-place finish. He completed the 5.4k in 13 minutes, 44.4 seconds. It was the second runner-up finish in as many days for Knowlton.

“I’m really happy with how I did,” Knowlton said. “I knew coming into it (Falmouth’s) Gabe Mahoney was going to be really fast. I knew second would be a very, very good race for me, a very strong race. Yesterday, I didn’t feel as good as I hoped, but today I had a really good day.”

Mahoney grabbed the individual title, winning the race in 13:15.1.

Josh Therrien (14:10.6) and Jarod Farrar (14:16.6) finished fourth and seventh, respectively, for the Hornets.

Being within striking distance of the Yachtsmen gave the Hornets a little extra momentum going into the final day, even though they were unable to catch them.

“We really wanted to catch Falmouth,” Knowlton said. “Being five points behind them kind of lit a fire, I guess. We were so close. They dominated again, but being so close to them and being ahead of Mt. Blue really helped push us today.”

The Cougars finished 24 points back of Leavitt. Daniel Lesko paced the Cougars with a third-place finish, completing the race in 13:56.3. They compiled 88 points through the two events, placing third.

But the day belonged to Falmouth. The Yachtsmen had their top four skiers finish in the top 10, allowing them to maintain their lead from Tuesday. They finished with a two-day total of 52 points.

Mt. Blue got the better of Leavitt in the girls’ race as the Cougars finished second in the freestyle with 46 points as well as overall with 88 points. The Hornets took fourth behind Deering with 63 points Wednesday and 122 overall. Deering compiled 117 points.

Julia Ramsey had the top finish for the Cougars, taking fifth in 17:51.4. She was third in the classical race Tuesday.

“Julia’s just a tremendous skier,” Mt. Blue coach Buzz Davis said. “She’s been doing it a long time. She’s just a supernatural skier, beautiful skier. She just glides her way around.”

Meghan Charles also cracked the top 10 for Mt. Blue, grabbing ninth in 18:07.1. The Cougars placed their top four skiers in the top 22.

The Hornets had their four scorers in the top 25. McKenzie Varney had the top time for Leavitt at 17:56.3, good for seventh. Brooke Varney (18:41.2) was 14th.

Oxford Hills (195) rounded out the top five. Julia Dillon finished seventh in 17:55.4.

But with three skiers in the top four, Falmouth cruised to a Nordic state title with 40 points. Anna Morin (16:59.7), Lucy Mahoney (17:25.9) and London Bernier (17:50.8) finished first, second and fourth, respectively.

The Yachtsmen girls won the overall state title with 125 points in the four disciplines. The boys’ title belonged to Mt. Blue, which accumulated 168 points.

Edward Little’s Victoria Beliveau and Mt. Blue’s Miles Pelletier won their respective skimeister titles. Beliveau edged Greely’s Jessie Hoffman, 129-133. Pelletier accumulated 80 points, 45 clear of Oxford Hills’ Cameron Bancroft.
