PORTLAND (AP) — The word “cold” doesn’t do justice to the frigid temperatures across Maine.

The National Weather Service reports Tuesday morning that it is colder than 20-below in some areas, temperatures that feel even colder when the wind chill is included.

Wiscasset is at minus-21 while Presque Isle is minus-20.

It’s 15-below in Frenchville, but feels 35-below with the wind chill.

Temperatures in some other Maine cities include minus-19 in Bangor and minus-9 in the Lewiston-Auburn area. Augusta comes in at minus-8.

In Portland, a low of 11 degrees below zero broke the record of 7 below set on Feb. 24, 1956.

It will “warm up,” so to speak in many areas to the single digits — above zero.
