LEWISTON — A pair of New York men were taken into custody Thursday night after police surrounded a house on Cottage Street and captured them on the upper floors.

For nearly an hour, police kept the home at 134 Cottage St. surrounded, ultimately sending a dog into the building after the men refused to come out.

Both men were arrested after police with mobile bunkers burst in, using chemical spray to subdue at least one of the men.

Police and drug agents had gone to the home, near the dead-end section of Cottage Street, shortly before 8 p.m. to serve warrants. Investigators described the men as “high risk” and said extra precautions were taken as police approched them.

When the men failed to respond to police demands to leave the home, more officers were called to the scene. Some officers trained flashlights on all sides of the building while others attempted to make contact with the men.

The first man was taken into custody at about 8:30 p.m., after police entered the home, searched the upper floors and located one man attempting to hide in the attic. The second man was captured shortly after.

By 9 p.m., police and drug agents remained at the two-story home, executing search warrants as part of an ongoing investigation.
