MINOT — Selectmen on Monday met with Harold Brooks and worked out a deal for him to redeem three parcels the town took Jan. 15 for unpaid taxes.
Minot holds the deeds to the 130 acres. Brooks agreed to pay about $5,000 in taxes, fees and penalties accumulated over three years in order to reclaim his property. He agreed to make full payment within two weeks and the board agreed to sign the deeds over to him when he does.
The land, which abutts Brooks’ land in Hebron, is where he has held the Redneck Olympics the past few years.
In other business, selectmen turned down Regional School Unit 16’s request for the town Highway Department to remove snow at Minot Consolidated School.
The board’s opinion was that the highway crew already had its hands full keeping the town’s 65 miles of roads open.
Noting that it appeared RSU 16’s plan called for having the three district towns, Mechanic Falls, Minot and Poland, take care of their individual elementary schools, and contracting with a private firm for work at the Poland Regional High School/Whittier Middle School complex, selectmen figured the district might be better off contracting for all the work.
“The way things are now, if we were to take on the responsibility to plow the Minot Consolidated School, that’s what we would have to do,” Saunders said. “Our guys have no idle time.”
In his report to the board, Saunders said there is a strong possibility that the town may be reimbursed for part of the costs “above and beyond the usual” incurred as a result of the Jan. 27 blizzard.
Saunders said extraordinary expenses incurred by the town amounted to $21,975 and FEMA’s acceptance of an emergency declaration for the event could mean that the town will receive 75 percent of that. The money would be applied to the shortfall in the Highway Department’s winter snow removal budget for the fiscal year that ended Jan. 31.
Board members honored and thanked Selectman Dean Campbell for his service to the board and the town. He has served on the board since 2004 and has been chairman the past several years. He chose not to run for re-election this year.
Campbell thanked selectmen for their support.
