LEWISTON — Top student singing groups and poets from Bates College will perform at the Room at Trinity on  Saturday, March 14, beginning at 7 p.m.

The Deansmen, Gospelaires and the Manic Optimists are all long-time student-led a cappella groups, well-loved on campus and beyond. The Bates College Deansmen are a 12-to-14-voice, all-male a cappella group that has been entertaining the college community and beyond since 1957. In their signature tuxedos, they happily sing at many venues, including local charity events and other schools and colleges. In the past, the Deansmen have performed for the Boston Celtics, George Bush, Sr., The Dartmouth Aires and Rockapella. The men have even appeared on both local Maine and Icelandic television. Their most recent album, “Cave Life,” was released in 2012.

The Manic Optimists is a group of 16 men who provide a high-energy show, some comedy and some drama, with creative choreography thrown in. One source says: “A Manic Optimists set is punched with fun and high energy that leaves the audience with a never-ending smile.”

The Gospelaires is a 14-member group of men and women from Bates College and the community, specializing in Afro-American gospel music, both traditional and contemporary. The group’s music director,Stephen Saxon, is associated minister of music at Bates. He was church pianist and choir director for the Brunswick Naval Air Station Chapel from 1999 until its closing in September 2010. A graduate of Bowdoin College, he is also a professional composer, producer, arranger and studio recording engineer.

The three presenting poets, Barbara VanDerburgh, Shelby Sullivan and Jameson Jones, are Bates College English majors completing their senior theses this semester. Their projects are culminating several years of apprenticeship to the art of poetry.

The concert begins at 7 p.m. with doors opening at 6:30. Snacks and beverages will be offered at intermission. A suggested$10 donation toward the artists and the many neighborhood ministries of Trinity Church may be made at the door. Children are free.
