LEWISTON — One man was hospitalized and others examined for pain after a car sped into oncoming traffic Wednesday night on the Lewiston side of the Longley Bridge.

Witnesses said a man driving a four-door Chevrolet appeared to lose control of his car on Main Street in front of Pedro O’Hara while heading toward the Longley Bridge at about 7:30 p.m.

The car bounced onto the sidewalk on that side of the street, veered across three lanes and crashed into a pair of cars before coming to rest on the opposite side of the bridge, one witness said.

“It’s a really good thing there weren’t people walking on the sidewalks,” said Clifford Roy, who had been driving from Auburn into Lewiston on the bridge.

It was believed a medical condition may have caused the man to lose control of his car before crashing. His identity was not immediately available.

Roy said he was about to drive onto Main Street in Lewiston when he saw the oncoming car veer out of control on the Auburn-bound side of the street.

“He was riding up on the sidewalk, taking down signs and all of that,” Roy said. “That’s when he swerved over to the other side of the bridge. He was coming right toward us and then hit the car behind me.”

The runaway vehicle swiped a second car, witnesses said, and crashed onto the sidewalk on the Lewiston-bound side of the bridge.

“I thought for sure he was going to go right over the side of the bridge,” said Roy, who dialed 911. “We got out and went to his car to see if he was OK, but there were already people standing around him. He wasn’t moving or anything.”

Police, fire and rescue crews were on the scene in minutes. While police steered traffic around the crash site, firefighters and paramedics tended to the victims.

There were no serious injuries reported, but the driver of the Chevrolet was taken by ambulance to Central Maine Center for an unknown medical condition.
