Saint Dominic Academy was set to play Lewiston High School for a shot at the Class A boys’ state hockey championship and former Saints goalie Zack Roy could not be there.

“It was awful,” the St. Dom’s graduate said.

While listening to Tuesday’s game on the radio from his dorm room at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, Roy directed his film crew as he has done all season.

“When (Austin) Roy scored that last goal, I texted Riley to GET DOWN ON THAT ICE,” Roy said.

Roy, Riley Whitcomb and Casey Clement have been beside the ice all season, documenting St. Dom’s quest for a state championship in “Behind the Black & White,” a film named for the school’s colors.

Roy’s idea to follow an entire season from behind the scenes came about during his junior year at St. Dom’s. “But I had no time because I was playing hockey,” he said.

He filmed his graduation in 2014 and set off for college to study digital media.

When he returned home to Monmouth over winter break, he, his longtime friend Clement and Whitcomb, an intern at Praxis Production Studios, started shooting.

The script called for filming practices, games and the locker room, win or lose.

“I try to be right up there with the guys so that you feel like you’re there inside the movie,” Roy said.

“The players are all cool with being around the cameras,” said Whitcomb, a resident of Turner and a junior at Leavitt Area High School.

Roy said he told the players about his plan and with their permission, he started filming. He left the coach bit up to the players.

Shortly after filming began, tragedy hit the St. Dom’s hockey community.

Casey Cloutier, a 14-year-old member of the St. Dom’s junior varsity hockey team, and his father, Ghislain B. Cloutier, were killed in an automobile accident in Leeds.

Roy, Clement and Whitcomb did not know Casey Cloutier, but his death hit home.

“Having been part of St. Dom’s and the hockey team — I will always be part of it,” Roy said. “It’s like a family at St. Dom’s.”

He decided that all proceeds from the sale of “Behind the Black & White” DVDs will go to the Cloutier family of Winthrop.

“I wanted to help the family as much as I could,” Roy said. “It’s a hard time for them right now.”

The movie will debut in mid-April after Roy, Clement and Whitcomb edit the film over Roy’s spring break.

Roy is on his way home for Saturday’s state championship game against Scarborough. He will be shooting from the bench while Clement and Whitcomb will cover each end of the ice.

While not students at St. Dom’s, Clement and Whitcomb feel right at home with the Saints.

“I almost feel like I go to St. Dom’s,” said Clement, a senior at Monmouth Academy.

Win or lose, it will be a great film, Roy said. “After all, they did make it to the state championship.”

All proceeds from the sale of “Behind the Black & White” DVDs will go to the family of Casey Cloutier, a 14-year-old member of the Saint Dominic Academy junior varsity hockey team who was killed in an automobile accident in December.
