AUBURN — Hundreds of homes and some intersections went dark Thursday night after a power transformer blew along Minot Avenue.

The power outage was reported at about 7:40 p.m. Police discovered the blown transformer near the Water District building. Several traffic lights had stopped working in the area.

Public Services headed to intersections along Minot Avenue and Spring and High streets to set up stop signs while repairs were getting underway. Police notified railroad officials in case trains were expected to pass through.

At 8 p.m., Central Maine Power reported roughly 1,200 homes and businesses in the area had lost power. A crew was sent to Auburn to make repairs.
