MINOT — Town meeting voters on Saturday approved a $180,000 plan for additions and renovations to the Central Fire Station and the Orchard Fire Station.

The plan, as approved, is a scaled-back version of a previously rejected $536,000 plan for a major addition to the Central Fire Station that would have met the town’s needs for at least another generation.

When the half-million-dollar plan was rejected a year ago for the third time, fire and rescue department officials prepared a plan to address the department’s immediate needs for an additional bay for rolling stock and space for training personnel.

The Fire Department’s request for $21,000 to improve radio communications by transferring the antenna from the Center Minot Grange to a tower on Harris Road was rejected with a call for more study on the matter.

Voters approved $227,000 for common roads, an increase of $60,000 over last year due mainly to the need to replace major culverts on Goodwin and Verrill roads.

Town Administrator Arlan Saunders noted that the twin culverts at Cool Brook, under Goodwin Road, are about a third of the size needed and, because the Department of Environmental Protection requires a replacement that allows for fish passage, it will need an open-bottom box that could well cost $50,000.

He estimated the cost of a culvert at Morgan Brook on Verrill Road at about $10,000.

Saunders warned that should either culvert fail, the town could be looking at having to close off a major route to Mechanic Falls if there is no money for a replacement.

Voters approved $295,000 for the summer paving program, earmarked for Goodwin Road and Grange Avenue, a $20,000 increase over last year’s program.

Voters approved the Recreation Department’s request for $15,000 to apply toward building a fourth field in Minot Memorial Park. Candace Gilpatric said a new field would cost about $45,000 and the $15,000 will trigger a $5,000 donation and provide the committee with about $25,000 to work with.

Total spending approved, according to Selectman Eda Tripp, was $1.67 million, $150,000 more than last year.

In town elections, Elaine Verrill, who received 5 write-in votes for one of the two open seats on the RSU 16 School Committee, declined to accept an appointment. Diane Sullivan, who received 2 write-in votes, accepted a position on the committee. Selectmen have the duty of filling the town’s remaining open seat.

Tripp presented Helen Clifford with a plaque in honor of her receiving the Spirit of America Award from Minot and the town meeting applauded Clifford for her years of service to the town as detailed in the Town Report’s dedication to her.

Registrar of Voters Hester Gilpatric reported that 109 registered voters attended the meeting, “an encouraging improvement” over the 83 townspeople attending last year’s annual town meeting.
