LEWISTON — A local man was recovering at a Lewiston hospital Saturday, a day after he was struck by a truck on Lisbon Street.

Police said Russell Duguay, 46, suffered a fractured wrist as well as bumps and bruises when he was struck while walking in the center of Lisbon Street, near Androscoggin Avenue, at about 6:30 p.m.

Investigators said Duguay was struck by the mirror of a truck driven by Adam Higgins, an off-duty police sergeant who had been driving to a hockey game with his son.

When Duguay appeared in the middle of the street, police said, Higgins swerved to avoid hitting him. Duguay, who had been carrying a car battery and other items, was clipped by a mirror and knocked into the street.

Witnesses said Higgins immediately stopped and ran to the injured man to administer aid. Rescue crews arrived minutes later and transported Duguay to Central Maine Medical Center.

Police blocked off a section of Lisbon Street for about an hour and called in Maine State Police to assist with the investigation. By Saturday night, it remained unclear why Duguay had been walking in the middle of the street.

His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
