Not long after Brad Berube played in his final high school hockey game — the Class A state championship — the St. Dominic Academy senior captain got some uplifting news from his coaching staff.

During a banquet at St. Dom’s on Saturday night following the Saints’ double-overtime loss to Scarborough, coach Steve Ouellette informed Berube that he was one of four finalists for the 2015 Travis Roy award.

“It’s definitely an honor,” Berube said. “Four people in Maine Class A hockey, to be one of them is pretty spectacular in my eyes, especially going up against the talent there is this year. It feels pretty awesome.”

The other three finalists are Lawrence/Skowhegan’s Cody Martin, Falmouth’s Isac Nordstrom and South Portland/Waynflete/Freeport’s Andrew Whipple. The winner will be announced Sunday during the awards banquet at the Ramada Inn in Lewiston.

Berube joins a list of nine other Saints who’ve been named finalists for the award, which highlights the most outstanding senior in Class A hockey. Brian Toussaint won the inaugural award in 1996. Joey Dumais (2001) and Richard Paradis (2009) have since claimed the award for the Saints.

“It would be great to win it, but being nominated as the final four is a good enough honor for me, especially considering who Travis Roy is,” Berube said. “He was an outstanding hockey player. To be in the final four is pretty special.”

The two-year captain and four-year varsity letterwinner led the team in scoring with 43 points (18 goals, 25 assists). He posted two goals and an assist in three playoff games, including the Saints’ lone goal against Scarborough in the state championship game. Berube’s led St. Dom’s in scoring each of the past three seasons.

Postseason accolades are nothing new for Berube. He was named second-team all-state as a sophomore and was a first-team all-state selection as a junior.

Berube missed just one game — this year’s season-opener against Scarborough — during his four-year high school career. He appeared in three state championship games.

Whether it’s been via phone calls, texts or social media, Berube has had an outpouring of support from his teammates, friends and family.

“They’ve congratulating me, saying how I’ve deserved it working hard for four years and how bringing it back to St. Dom’s would be a big moment for our school,” Berube said.

Off the ice, Berube has volunteered his time at summer camps, working with youth hockey players. He’s also a member of St. Dom’s key club, spanish club and yearbook club.

Berube has some stiff competition to hurdle if he is to become the fourth Saint to win the award.

Martin finished the season with 61 points (35 g, 26 a), ending his career with 129 points (78 g, 51 a) for Lawrence/Skowhegan. Martin led Eastern Class A in scoring this year.

Nordstrom and Whipple are the representatives from the West. Nordstorm averaged 2.6 points per game for Falmouth despite missing six games due to injury. He led the team in power-play goals and was second in both game-winning goals and plus-minus. Nordstrom won two state titles with the Yachtsmen, all while learning to read and write the English language. Nordstrom grew up in Sweden before moving to the United States as a freshman.

Whipple is the first Travis Roy finalist in South Portland High School’s hockey history. He finished with 42 points this season and helped lead his team to the No. 6 seed in the playoffs.
