VIENNA — Voters will to the polls at the community building from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 13, to elect officials and reconvene there at 9 a.m. Saturday for the annual town meeting.
There are two contested races. Steven Lilley Sr., Roger Pelton Jr. and Selectman Christopher Smith are running for second selectman. Road Commissioner Daniel Goucher and challenger Darrell Watson are facing off for that position.
First Selectman Doris “Dodi” Thompson, Third Selectman Jeffrey Rackliff, Tax Collector and Town Clerk Annie Tibbetts and Treasurer Martha Gross are running unopposed. All of the the positions are for one year.
In the selectmen’s report, Thompson said for the first time in recent history, the town was able to make it to the issuance of 2014 tax bills without a Tax Anticipation Note to cover expenses.
“Our cash flow continues to improve, so hopefully that will also be the case in 2015,” she wrote.
Voters will consider a 52-article warrant. The amounts they will be asked to raise and appropriate include $86,650 for general government, $14,141 for debt service on the town firetruck, $35,500 for Fire Department operating expenses, $3,500 for the Mt. Vernon Rescue Squad, $162,000 for winter road work and $65,000 for the road maintenance account.
In the warrant, selectmen recommend that voters raise and appropriate $92,000 for the paving account. Of that amount, $65,000 is to be raised from taxation, while $27,000 will come from the State Local Road Assistance Grant.
Other articles include $56,000 for the waste management account, $3,159 for public safety dispatching and $14,590 for ambulance service.
