LEWISTON — On Tuesday evening, March 17, at 6:30 p.m. in Lewiston Public Library’s Callahan Hall, Maine author Kate Webber will be talking about her recent publication, “Swan’s Island Chronicles: Borrowed, Exaggerated and Half-Forgotten Tales of Island Life.” The event is free and open to the public.

The small, downeast Maine community of Swan’s Island has seen summer people come and go, but it has always held onto its stories. Webber’s book illustrates island life with humor, affection and the voices of islanders—from the first settlement and 1950s hijinks to courtship and commerce.

Kate Webber earned a degree in anthropology from Bates College, Class of 2011, with concentrations in “environment, place and history” and “medieval worlds.” Since her graduation she worked with both the Freeport Historical Society and the Swan’s Island Historical Society.

Her Swan’s Island work was done as part of the Island Institute’s fellow program.

Webber’s observations of the history and social life on the island led to a column in the Institute’s publication, “The Working Waterfront,” which formed the basis for her book. In late 2013 Webber joined the Maine Humanities Council as their Communications and Development Assistant where she manages the Council’s podcasts and social media presence.

The March 17 program will conclude with a book sale and signing. For further information, contact the LPL Reference Desk at 513-3135 or via email at [email protected]
