SCARBOROUGH — Carole Anne Taylor, 71, of Falmouth, passed away peacefully Wednesday, March 11, at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House.
She was born on Nov. 11, 1943, in Seattle, Wash., a daughter of the late Joseph Lloyd and Patricia Anne (Hall) Hunt. Carole attended Reed College and Harvard University.
She devoted her life to social justice activism, which continues to resonate in the effects of her community work, brilliant scholarship and incomparable teaching. In 2011, Carole retired from Bates College as professor emerita of English, where she helped to develop the American cultural studies program.
Carole is survived by her partner, William Corlett, of West Falmouth; son, Eric Nicholson Taylor and his partner, Erin O’Connell Taylor, of Cape Elizabeth; two unforgettable grandchildren, Grace Elizabeth Taylor and Hope Anne Taylor; a brother, Eliot King Smith, of Riverhead, N.Y.; sister, Kate Elizabeth Scooler, of Leonia, N.J.; and several nieces and nephews.
