AUGUSTA (AP) — A Maine prison inmate who was accidentally released because of what was described as a “clerical error” is back in custody.

Kennebec County Chief Deputy Ryan Reardon told WMTW-TV that 41-year-old Freeman Taylor Jr. turned himself in at about 10 p.m. Thursday, about nine hours after he’d been released.

Taylor had been sentenced earlier Thursday to serve four years in prison on drug trafficking and other charges.

But rather than being sent straight to state prison, the judge, at the request of Taylor’s lawyer, allowed him to remain at the county jail a while longer so he could visit his new wife one last time before starting his sentence. Instead, he was freed.

Taylor was married in jail last month while awaiting trial.

Reardon says the public was never in danger.
