MINOT — Fire Chief Dean Campbell told selectmen Monday that he will be working this week on developing a request for proposals for the construction of additions to Central Fire Station and Orchard Fire Station.
On March 7, town meeting voters approved $180,000 for the construction of a 20- by 40-foot addition at Orchard Fire Station, to be used primarily as a training meeting room, and an 18- by 60-foot addition at Central Fire Station, which will provide a vehicle parking bay.
“By going with (a request for proposals) we will be able to negotiate for something that will be the best fit for what we need to do,” Campbell said. He said he hopes the process will result in ideas that might save a few dollars and still accomplish their goals.
Selectman Dan Callahan cautioned Campbell not to neglect techniques to conserve energy. “It’s going to be there a long time, do it right,” he said.
The Fire Department has been working for more than three years to develop a proposal to meet its needs and and win approval of townspeople.
The proposal to finance $180,000 over four years passed, 61-25.
Also Monday, the board elected Steve French as chairman and Dan Gilpatric as vice chairman.
French said two people who received write-in votes for the Regional School Unit 16 Committee agreed to serve. Diane Sullivan accepted at town meeting and Tina Love accepted when contacted later by Town Administrator Arlan Saunders.
In other business, selectmen officially signed three quitclaim deeds, returning the three parcels of land the town acquired from Harold Brooks in January for failure to pay property taxes. The board also made arrangements with Joshua Ray to redeem his 20-acre lot off Death Valley Road which had also been taken in January for nonpayment of property taxes.
Selectman Eda Tripp said she contacted RSU 16 Superintendent Tina Meserve for an update on where this year’s school budget is headed. It appeared, Tripp said, that the budget could be at least a million higher than last year’s. “It is something that really bears watching,” she said.
Highway Supervisor Scott Parker reported that his crew had hauled snow out of West Minot Village in anticipation of Maple Sugar Sunday. He also said town roads have been posted to prevent heavy vehicles from damage during the time frost is leaving the ground and that, other than a few frozen culverts, “all is good.”
