NEWRY — Sunday River Ski Resort will host its 25th annual Eat the Heat Chili Cookoff and Firefighters’ Race on Sunday, March 22.
Spokeswoman Sarah Devlin said Thursday afternoon that 15 teams have signed up for the Firefighters Race. Teams of five firefighters wearing full firefighter gear navigate their way through a slalom course while carrying a 50-foot fire hose. The race is from 10 a.m. to noon on South Ridge.
All money raised will go toward Maine Handicapped Skiing, Devlin said.
“We have 15 teams so far, and it’s still growing,” Devlin said. “We moved the event this year so it’s taking place on South Ridge, so we’re expecting a lot of spectators this time around.”
After the Firefighters’ Race, a chili cook-off will be held inside White Cap Lodge, where eight restaurants will be represented: Sudbury Inn, Roosters Roadhouse, Sunday River Brew Pub, Foggy Goggle, Camp, Sunday River Food Court, Cho Sun, and Phoenix.
“Anybody can show up at the cook-off to eat,” Devlin said. “It’s only $1 per sample.”
At 2 p.m., a chili dog eating contest will be held, Devlin said. Registration is free and limited to eight contestants.
