1926 – 2015

AUBURN — Fernand “Fern” J. Barriault, 89, a resident of Schooner Estates, Auburn, and formerly of Upland Road, Lisbon, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 19, at the Hospice House of Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice in Auburn surrounded by his loving family.

Fern was born in Lewiston on March 16, 1926, the son of Albert and Ludivine Dumont Barriault.

He was married to the former Violette Nadeau on June 22, 1946, at Holy Family Church in Lewiston. Mrs. Barriault passed away on Nov. 17, 2013.

Fern was a former communicant at Saints Peter & Paul Basilica in Lewiston and of St. Anne’s in Lisbon. Fern graduated from Lewiston High School in 1944, and then, after 25 months of service in the U.S. Navy as an aviation machinist mate, he joined his father in the family beer business. Fern worked at Central Distributors as a truck driver, salesman and sales manager, and upon the death of his father in April 1954, he became general manager and treasurer. Fern later served as president of Central for many years, and after retirement, he continued to serve as treasurer and on the board of directors.

Throughout his career, Fern served on numerous boards and councils, including the Lewiston Exchange Club, Chamber of Commerce, Lewiston Development Corporation, Androscoggin Valley Regional Planning Commission, American Legion and the Maine Beer & Wine Distributors Association.

Fern was an avid golfer and a boating enthusiast.

Fern is survived by three children, Ronald F. Barriault and partner, Michele, of Greenville/Auburn, Dennis A. Barriault and wife, Janet, of Poland, and Louise Barriault-Swank and husband, Cliff, of Melbourne, Fla.; five grandchildren, Amy Barriault, Andrea Gouldson, Michael Barriault, Audrey Barriault and Renee Barriault; and five great- grandchildren, Aiden, Brienne, Joseph, Liam and Margaret.
