AUBURN — Police said Hotel Road was reopened late Tuesday afternoon following the Monday collision of a train and an 18-wheeler in which the truck driver sustained minor injuries. The crash overturned the truck and derailed the locomotive.

Auburn police and fire responded to the railroad crossing on Hotel Road near Cote Crane for a tractor-trailer and train collision.

According to a release from Deputy Chief Jason Moen, a preliminary investigation showed Darren Whaley, 62, of Auburn, was traveling north on Hotel Road, operating a tractor-trailer owned by Auburn Concrete.

At that time, a St. Laurent & Atlantic train operated by engineer Daniel Couture, 45, of Auburn, was traveling westbound on the rail line.

Moen said Whaley ignored the crossing’s warning system and attempted to cross the rail line ahead of the train.

According to the release, the train struck the tractor-trailer, overturning it and spilling the truck’s load of crushed rock into a parking lot. The train’s engine derailed from the track while the 33 rail cars it was hauling stayed on the rails.

Whaley was taken to a local hospital for minor injuries and was cited by Cpl. Kris Bouchard for failure to stop for a railroad warning device.

The tractor-trailer truck is considered a total loss. The train engine sustained slight damage.
