PARIS — Selectmen voted 3-1 Monday to give Town Manager Amy Bernard a $4,000 raise and extend her contract to 2017. Her new salary is $63,000.
One selectman and at least one resident opposed the wage increase and contract extension. Resident Mike Risica said the town was getting ready to raise taxes, and he didn’t think it was wise to change Bernard’s contract because it could set a precedent for other departments.
“I am not in favor of raises,” he said. “I think it puts us in a bad position.”
Voting for the measure were Chairman Ryan Lorrain, Vice Chairman Robert Wessels and Sam Elliot. Voting against was Janet Jamison.
“I can tell you for my part, I hear Mike’s concern … ,” Wessels said. “Part of it, I am very pleased with the direction we’ve come as a town since Amy’s come on board.”
Elliot said Bernard paid for her own health insurance last year. He agreed she’s done a good job.
“She’s done that without much flash and glitter and fanfare, and gets the job done,” Elliot said.
Jamison said Tuesday that she voted against the measure because of the contract extension.
“She doesn’t have that much experience,” Jamison said.
