AUBURN — A Jay man was charged Wednesday with robbing cash from a Greene convenience store in February.

An Androscoggin County grand jury indicted Thomas Mulkern, 29, of 6 Jewell St., on a count of Class B robbery, punishable by up to 10 years in prison. He also was charged with theft by unauthorized taking, a felony punishable by up to five years in prison and violation of condition of release, a misdemeanor.

Mulkern already was in Androscoggin County Jail on charges involving a scuffle with police the same day as the robbery of the Circle K store on Route 202 on Feb. 15.

A clerk at the store called 911 after a man wearing a white shirt over his face told her he had a weapon and would “really hurt her bad” if she didn’t do what he wanted, according to a police affidavit in court records.

She gave him roughly $100 in cash from the register and he fled on foot toward a car in an adjacent parking lot, police said. That car had been driven in the direction of Lewiston. Police took tire and shoe impressions made in the freshly fallen show.

Auburn police arrested Mulkern later that day on Turner Street after the car in which he was riding was pulled over for a traffic violation. Mulkern attempted to flee, then assaulted an officer, according to the affidavit. He was identified as the person in a surveillance video from the store. DNA on clothing left at the scene of the robbery matched Mulkern’s.

The cash wasn’t recovered.
