OXFORD — A crane being loaded with counterweights for work on the sewer treatment plant next to Route 121 tipped on its side Monday, leaking hydraulic fluid but causing no major damage.

The incident, which happened around noon, resulted in approximately five gallons of biodegradable fluid being spilled onto the ground, according to T. Buck Construction Project Manager Mark McPheters.

There were no injuries or damage to the building’s foundation. Crews are preparing the site this week for construction of the above-ground portion of the facility.

Town Manager Michael Chammings said the Maine Department of Environmental Protection was notified as a precaution but it did not appear that a significant amount of fluid had been spilled. Crews deployed cleanup kits, he said.

Neither the town fire nor the police departments responded. The town maintains a clerk at the job site at all times, Chammings said.

“We’re happy no one is hurt and there is no environmental damage,” Chammings said.

McPheters said a new crane was already in route and that the incident would not cause delays.
