LEWISTON — The Twin Cities’ bus operator is looking at its bus shelters with an eye toward moving some and eliminating others.

“We are working to put together a plan, as part of capital planning, to replace bus shelters,” Marsha Bennett, transit coordinator for the Citylink bus system, said. “As we replace them, we’d like them to all be the same to create an identity, so people know. If some need to be replaced because they are in bad shape, we are looking at that as well.”

The Lewiston-Auburn Transit Committee, operator of Citylink, is hosting two meetings Wednesday to take public comments on the shelters.

The first is at 2 p.m. in Auburn Hall’s second floor community room. The second is scheduled for 6 p.m. in the Lewiston Public Library’s Couture meeting room on the first floor near the circulation desk.

“There are factors that need to be considered,” she said. “Just because someone says they need one in a certain place, we can’t put one everywhere. You have to look for areas where there is a high traffic that would warrant the shelter.”

Citylink has 11 bus shelters, five in Auburn and six in Lewiston. Bennett said the committee wants to hear from riders and residents about where the shelters currently work and suggestions about places that might be better.

“We are also hoping to partner with neighboring businesses to partner on maintaining them,” she said. “They could help keep it clear of snow or make sure there’s no trash sitting around.”
