MINOT — Selectmen on Monday went over fire Chief Dean Campbell’s specifications for the additions to the the Orchard and Central fire stations.
Campbell said he intended to ask for design and build bids for both projects. They are an 18-by-60-foot bay for rescue at the Central Fire Station and a 20-by-46-foot addition, primarily for training space, at the Orchard Station.
He said the length of the Orchard Station had been measured at 40 feet but it’s actually another 4 to 6 feet longer.
“We’re just asking for bids on the exterior shell and a concrete slab,” Campbell said. “Neither project is very complicated.”
Department volunteers will take care of excavation and site work, according to Campbell, and he intends to act as unpaid general contractor, securing bids for electrical work at both stations and some plumbing at the Orchard Station.
“We’re trying to get as much as possible out of the $180,000 allocated,” Campbell said.
The intention is to reuse the siding on the front and rear and apply new material on the side walls.
Selectman Eda Tripp questioned whether the specifications, as Campbell presented them, went into sufficient detail. She said he never established the thickness of the concrete slab that would be required.
Selectman Steve French said Campbell will have to have his plans reviewed by the Office of the State Fire Marshal, something Campbell said he would be taking care of this week.
In other business, selectmen authorized the treasurer to make out a check to the state treasurer for $73 to cover the filing fee for a culvert permit. The culvert is for Goodwin Road at the Cool Brook crossing.
Town Administrator Arlan Saunders said the highway crew will replace the culvert with two 60-inch diameter culverts to either side of a 96-inch diameter culvert, which will sit about 18 inches into the streambed to accommodate the passage of fish.
Saunders said he was seeking a permit by rule, which would allow the town to go ahead with the project, provided state officials have no objections.
The project would be undertaken sometime after July 17. It would involve raising the level of Goodwin Road between 18 inches and 2 feet. Final paving would probably be done next year.
Selectmen also told Saunders to seek bids for resetting a number of headstones that have fallen, are broken or are tipped in the Center Minot Cemetery. Saunders said the cemetery fund probably had enough to take care of about half the problem stones.
