BRUNSWICK (AP) — The top Democrats in the Maine Legislature are gearing up for a visit to Brunswick to take questions from residents on their tax proposal.

House Speaker Mark Eves and Senate Minority Leader Justin Alfond will hold their third town hall meeting on Wednesday at the Unitarian Universalist Church. House Majority Leader Jeff McCabe, Assistant House Majority Leader Sara Gideon and local lawmakers are also planning to attend.

Residents will get a chance to ask questions about the plan that Democrats unveiled last month as an alternative to Republican Gov. Paul LePage’s tax overhaul proposal.

Democrats say that low-and-middle income families would benefit more from their proposal than the governor’s. They also say LePage’s aggressive income tax cut would lead to budget shortfalls that will force cuts to things like education.
