BRUNSWICK — Drew Lashua had a hand in both runs scored for Edward Little in the 2-1 victory over the Brunswick Dragons Wednesday afternoon in eight innings.
His RBI double in the top of the sixth inning scored Austin Cox to give the Red Eddies the 1-0 lead. In the top eighth, he stole second after hitting a single and he scored the winning run on a throwing error.
Cam Berry scored Brunswick’s (4-5) lone run in the bottom of the sixth inning also on a throwing error. The Dragons left men on first and second base in the bottom of the eighth.
Lew Jensen went the distance for the Red Eddies (6-3) allowing five hits and striking out five. John Parker started for the Dragons going 72/3 innings and striking out 11. He also had two hits at the plate. Chuck Lowell came on in relief.
Poland 8, Yarmouth 3
POLAND — Ben Bernier and Zack Lowe scattered six hits and drew ample run support Wednesday as Poland hustled to a 8-3 WMC baseball win over Yarmouth.
The Knights (3-8) put up seven runs in a strong second-inning effort and were never challenged. Adam Mocciola led the way with four hits and four RBIs, while Alex Biron, Jake Wiseman and Ethan Callier all drove in a run.
Yarmouth (5-4) was paced by Connor O’Donnell with a pair of hits in the contest.
Dirigo 7, Winthrop 0
DIXFIELD — Kane Hutchins scattered four hits in 68 pitches Wednesday as Dirigo shut down Winthrop 7-0 in a mid-season MVC baseball rout.
Cooper Chiasson led the Cougars (8-1) with a pair of hits. Dirigo built a 3-0 lead after three frames and was never challenged.
Ben Allen went the distance for Winthrop (7-2) and was tagged with the loss.
Erskine 3, Leavitt 1
SOUTH CHINA — Dylan Presby scattered four hits through six innings, holding Leavitt nearly silent to post a 3-1 mid-season baseball victory Wednesday.
Caleb Cummings belted an RBI single in the fifth that ended up driving in the winning run for Erskine.
The Hornets didn’t go down without a scrap, as Ian Godfrey ripped an RBI double in the fifth to prevent the shutout. Chad Morin gave up two unearned runs for Leavitt.
Buckfield 7, Rangeley 1
RANGELEY — Left fielder Sidney Jackson had four hits, including a home run, as Buckfield coasted to a 7-1 victory over Rangeley in EWC baseball action Wednesday afternoon.
The Bucks scored seven runs in the first two innings. Jackson’s home run came in the second. Jake Kraske pitched the complete game win for Buckfield.
Freshman third baseman Tristen Dresser plated the only Laker (0-5) run on a single in the bottom of the seventh.
Freeport 4, Gray-New Gloucester 2
GRAY — Junior pitcher Jack Davenport struck out 13 batters as Freeport buttoned down a 4-2 victory over Gray-New Gloucester in WMC baseball action Wednesday afternoon.
Nathan Cyr collected two hits for the Falcons (4-5), including an RBI single in the third inning to plate Davenport.
Senior short stop Tyler St.Pierre tabulated three hits from the leadoff position for the Patriots (3-6). But Davenport’s pitching found it’s mark more times than not in the winning effort.
Boys’ lacrosse
Oak Hill 9, St. Dom’s 5
WALES — Senior attackman Matt Gilbert netted three goals as Oak Hill dispatched St. Dom’s 9-5 in boys’ lacrosse action Wednesday afternoon.
The Saints scored two unanswered goals in the first quarter. But the Raiders bounced back for a 4-3 advantage at the half and never looked back. Sophomore midfielder Steven Gilbert recorded two goals and an assist.
Attackman Kenton Ernst and midfielder Matt Chasse tallied two goals each for the Saints.
Mt. Blue 10, Lawrence 7
LAWRENCE — Cordell Ellis had four goals to lead the Mt. Blue Cougars to the 10-7 victory over the Lawrence Bulldogs in a KVAC matchup.
Tanner Bessey added a pair of goals in the victory, while Avery Giustra, Leo Flannery, Caleb Hall and Levi Meader each had a goal. Liam Welch dished out four assists while Hall had one assist.
Gunner McAllister had a pair of goals for the Bulldogs (1-8) while Zach Patenaude, Randy Richards, Nick Denis and Max Marin also scored in the losing effort.
Lawrence outshot Mt. Blue 27-26 with Alex Gilbert making 11 saves for Mt. Blue (1-5) and Derick Damon stopping eight shots for Lawrence.
Softball
Dirigo 30, Winthrop 2
DIXFIELD — After sprinting out to a 8-1 advantage in the first frame, Dirigo never let off the gas Wednesday and sped away to post a 30-2 rout over Winthrop in MVC softball action.
Megan Bradbury led the powerhouse Cougars with three hits and five RBIs, while Mariah Lafleur plated five runs on two hits. Katelyn Olsen helped her own cause with four hits and four RBIs, while Emma Lueders contributed with two hits and four RBIs.
Olsen gave up just two hits in five innings, while Molly Glaser allowed 21 hits in the loss.
Lincoln 6, Spruce Mountain 1
NEWCASTLE — Abby Farrin gave up just three hits and had 11 strikeouts Wednesday as Lincoln did a nice job of shutting down Spruce Mountain, 6-1, in more MVC midseason softball.
Morgan Achorn belted a base-clearing triple in the third to cap a four-run inning for the Eagles.
The Phoenix were led by Kailee Newcomb with two hits, while Alex Bessey belted out a snigle. Emily Keene gave up six hits and walked two in the loss.
Mountain Valley 15, Wiscasset 6
WISCASSET — Emily Laubauskas scattered seven hits in seven innings and received adequate run support as Mountain Valley hustled to a 15-6 victory over Wiscasset Wednesday.
Sydney Petrie led the Falcons (3-5) with three hits and three RBIs, while Sam Higley plated three runs on two hits. Jordan Turner also contributed with a pair of hits.
Kayla Jordan and Leah Potter led the Wolverines (2-6) with two hits apiece.
Leavitt 4, Erskine 3
SOUTH CHINA — Maddie Green’s RBI single in the sixth inning allowed Leavitt to edge Erskine 4-3 in a hard-fought KVAC softball tilt Wednesday.
Green led the Hornets (7-2) with three hits and three RBIs, while Libby Gilbert chipped in with two hits and one RBI.
The Eagles (6-3) were led by Angela Grady with two hits and one RBI.
Poland 14, Yarmouth 9
POLAND — Haley Whitworth led a group of four players with multiple hits Wednesday as Poland continued its stellar 2015 season with a 14-9 victory over Yarmouth.
Kelsey DeBurra led the well-rounded Knights (8-2) with three hits and four RBIs, while Emily Gibson went 3-for-4 and drove in a pair of runs. Whitworth and Kylie Martin each pounded out two hits and plated a run.
The Clippers were paced by Kallie Hutchinson, Cat Thompson, Sydney St. Pierre and Colleen Sullivan with two hits each.
Monmouth 13, Mt. Abram 1
SALEM — Emma Chasse gave up just two hits in five innings of work and drew all kinds of run support as Monmouth overpowered Mt. Abram 13-1 in more MVC softball action.
Christina Bonenfant led the Mustangs (5-4) with three hits, while Tia Day and Haley Fletcher each belted out two hits.
Katie Jordan went the distance for Mt. Abram (3-6), giving up 12 hits in the loss.
Rangeley 12, Buckfield 8
RANGELEY — Taylor Esty hurled seven innings of two-hit ball Wednesday as Rangeley hustled to a 12-8 win over Buckfield in an EWC softball matchup.
Celia Philbrick led the Lakers (2-3) with two hits and three RBIs, while Michaela Shorey pounded out three hits and drove in a run.
Rangeley trailed by a run after the first frame before putting six runs on the board during the next two innings.
Oxford Hills 18, Mt. Blue 4
FARMINGTON — Cody Akers had a two-run single in the nine-run first inning as Oxford Hills rolled to an 18-4 triumph over Mt. Blue in softball action Wednesday afternoon.
The Cougars (3-6) tried to get back in the game in the third inning by scoring four runs on four consecutive singles, but failed to produce no more than four runs. Lauren Guppy recorded two hits for Mt. Blue.
Akers got the win on the mound for the Vikings (9-1), going four innings and allowing just five hits and striking out one.
Erika Whitman came on in relief to shut down Mt. Blue in the fifth and sixth innings.
Alyssa Morin added a two-run triple in the first inning for Oxford Hills.
Telstar 19, Boothbay 0
BOOTHBAY — Sophomore first baseman Tehya Johnson cleared the bases with a triple in the second inning as Telstar leveled Boothbay, 19-0, in MVC softball action Wednesday afternoon.
The Rebels (7-2) scored 13 of their runs in the second inning. Junior short stop Becca Howard and senior catcher Sadie Ellsworth plated three runs each on second inning doubles.
The Seahawks (2-7) third baseman, Barbara Alley, broke up the no-hitter with a fifth-inning single
