LEWISTON — The Police Department has issued traffic advisories for three community events this weekend, starting with the March of Dimes walk Saturday morning.

Walkers will leave the Recreational Armory on Central Avenue at 8:30 a.m., walk along Sabattus, Main and Lincoln streets, and cross the Longley Bridge. All lanes will be open on the bridge, but motorists are asked to use caution because there will be many people on the sidewalks.

Also on Saturday, McMahon School PTO will host a 5k “Tiger Run” from the school on North Temple Street, a walk/run along Sabattus Street, Old Greene Road and surrounding neighborhood streets. Police will set some traffic buffers using cones, but traffic should not be radically slowed.

On Sunday, Bates College will host a triathlon from 8 a.m. to noon dedicated to the memory of John Durkin, a student athlete who died last year while studying abroad in Italy. He would have graduated with this year’s class.

The swimming and running events will take place almost entirely on the Bates campus, and the cycling will be on the roads in the nearby residential neighborhood of outer Central Avenue. Police will close Russell Street between East Avenue and College Street and traffic will be detoured onto College and Sabattus streets.

The section of Central Avenue between Campus Avenue and Hogan Road will also be closed, and Montello Street between East Avenue and College Street will be closed to through-traffic. There will be a detour from College Street to Stetson Road to Hogan Road. Traffic approaching from the other direction will be detoured to East Avenue.

According to a written statement from the Police Department, the road closures represent a significant disruption to the normal traffic corridors linking Auburn and Greene. There are a number of churches just outside the cycling course area, and police said congregants should expect interruptions in the usual Sunday morning traffic. Officers will be stationed at corners to direct cyclists and motorists.
