LISBON — Town councilors Tuesday night voted 5-2 to cut $399,610 from the proposed general education budget submitted by the School Committee.
The total council-approved school budget, including adult education, is $15.1 million, which is $163,115 more than this fiscal year.
The School Committee’s proposed budget called for $15.5 million.
Councilors voted 5-2 to reduce the recommended amount for additional local funds from $559,285 to $515,551. The lower amount exceeds the state’s Essential Programs and Services model by $221,732.
Councilors amended Article 19 to authorize spending $43,260 from the Capital Account for the first payment on a guaranteed performance contract with Siemens. Future payments will come from energy savings from the project.
Under Article 20, councilors voted 5-2 against authorizing any expenditures from current excess bond proceeds from the gym construction project, which is still underway.
Councilors did, however, approve the recommended amount of $48,809, under Article 21, to be applied to debt service on the bond for the track, which has been completed.
Councilors approved the following as recommended: Article 12, $4,546,269 for Essential Programs and Services; Article 13, $477,356 for local debt service; Article 16, appropriate $152,858 for adult education and raise $106,878 as the local share; Article 17, $168,672 for adult education; Article 18, authorize the expenditure of any grants received that do not require the expenditure of other funds not previously appropriated.
The School Committee will meet next week to review Articles 1 through 11 and discuss ways to make the necessary $399,610 in cuts.
The budget will go to voters June 9.
