AUBURN — Mitch Lorenz and Michael Bryant dropped a pair of squeeze bunts to score the only runs in the game and lift St. Dom’s to a 2-0 victory over Madison in MVC baseball action Wednesday afternoon.
Senior Matt Keaney led off the home half of the fifth inning with a single, and was followed with another from Ray Mosca. Back-to-back squeeze plays provided the Saints (8-4) with all the scoring they needed.
Junior right fielder Brian Edgerly led off the top of the third with a triple for the Bulldogs (5-7). Saint’s pitcher, Michael Bryant, held Edgerly at third by having the next batter fly out to right, and fan the subsequent pair with strikeouts to get out of the inning.
Dirigo 28, Boothbay 0
BOOTHBAY — Senior left fielder Anthony Todd nearly hit for the cycle as Dirigo crushed Boothbay 28-0 in five innings of MVC baseball action Wednesday afternoon.
Todd went 3-for-3 with three RBIs for the Cougars (11-1), while senior third baseman Kaine Hutchins smashed a two-run home run and added a single for four RBIs for Dirigo.
Junior left fielder Jordan Purin recorded one of the Seahawks (0-11) two hits in the game.
Cape Elizabeth 15, Poland 4
POLAND — Nate Ingalls collected four hits as Cape Elizabeth exploded for 12 runs in the fifth inning and a 15-4 triumph over Poland in baseball action Wednesday.
Matt Denison hit in the cleanup spot for the Capers. He went 3-for-4 with a walk and a strikeout and rounded up seven RBIs on the afternoon.
The Knights took an early lead with four runs in the third inning, but struggled to gain an ground over the next three innings. Adam Mocciola had a pair of hits and Kaleb Banker had a two-run double for Poland.
Lewiston 6, Hampden 3
LEWISTON — Austin Wing ignited a three-run fifth inning as Lewiston raced away to post a 6-3 victory of Hampden in KVAC baseball action Wednesday.
Kyle Ullrich scattered five hits in seven innings to notch the win. Wing belted an RBI-double for the Blue Devils (3-9) in that key fifth frame, while Bob Chabot also belted an RBI single.
Hampden (4-12) was paced by Jordan Dysart with a pair of hits.
Brewer 5, Oxford Hills 2
PARIS — Logan Rogerson belted a two-run double in the ninth inning as Brewer snuck past Oxford Hills 5-2 in MVC baseball action Wednesday.
Matt Pushard scattered six hits in nine frames to record the mound win. Pushard helped his own cause at the plate with a pair of hits.
The Vikings (8-4) were paced by Bailey West with two hits in a solid effort.
Winthrop 8, Telstar 2
BETHEL — Matt Ingram sparked a three-run first inning for Winthrop as the Ramblers sped away to post an 8-2 victory of Telstar in more MVC baseball action Wednesday.
Ingram belted an RBI single for the Ramblers, while Ben Caprara also belted out a pair of hits. Jacob Hickey scattered six hits in seven frames to record the win.
The Rebels were led by Tanner Wheeler with a pair of hits, while Josh Eliot suffered the loss after working the first three innings.
Oak Hill 14, Mountain Valley 7
WALES — Jonah Martin and Adam Merrill ignited two straight five-run innings as Oak Hill pulled away to post a 14-7 victory of Mountain Valley in an MVC baseball matchup Wednesday.
The Falcons (5-6) built a 6-4 advantage during the first three frames before the Raiders (5-7) began their big rally. Merrill belted an RBI triple in the fourth, while Martin smacked a timely RBI double.
Martin hurled three frames of scoreless relief with five strikeouts and just two hits allowed.
Lisbon 10, Carrabec 1
LISBON — Kyle Bourget and Tyler Halls combined efforts to scatter two hits and inspire ample run support as Lisbon overpowered Carrabec, 10-1, in MVC baseball action Wednesday.
Bourget and Ryley Austin led the Greyhounds (9-2) with two hits and two RBIs each, while Noah Francis drove in one run on three hits. RJ Sargent also contributed with two hits and one RBI.
The Cobras (6-6) were paced by Will Crawford, who drove in Tyler Reichart in the fourth inning.
Boys’ lacrosse
Messalonskee 11, Lewiston 2
WATERVILLE — Connor Smith and Dylan Burton stuffed three goals each as Messalonskee sailed to an 11-2 victory over Lewiston in KVAC boys’ lacrosse action Wednesday afternoon.
The Blue Devils (8-2) played tough in the first half. Sophomore midfielder Roman Dennis recorded a goal and an assist, while leading the team with six shots and four ground balls. The Eagles (7-3) demonstrated considerable discipline in the second half, capping the final quarter with a 5-0 advantage in goals.
Fryeburg 12, St. Dom’s 4
FRYEBURG — Ryan Caracciolo buffeted the opposing team with five goals, all in the second half, as Fryeburg raided St. Dom’s for a 12-4 victory in boys’ lacrosse action Wednesday afternoon.
The Raiders (4-5) scored five unanswered goals in the fourth quarter. Caracciolo and Corey Thibodeau netted two goals apiece in the frame.
Brendan Donovan tallied two goals and an assist in the first half for the Saints (5-5), including the tying goal (3-3) just before the half. Kenton Ernst recorded two goals for St. Dom’s.
Softball
Edward Little 5, Mt. Ararat 4
TOPSHAM — Grace Beaudet’s RBI double in the top of the seventh scored Emma Lashua as the Edward Little Red Eddies defeated the Mt. Ararat Eagles 5-4 in KVAC softball action.
Lashua had three hits on the day, including a double of her own. Hannah Smith and Taylor Depot had a pair of hits for EL (8-4).
The Eagles (4-8) responded in the bottom of the seventh with a pair of unearned runs but left the potential tying run at first base. Kaitlyn Cox had three hits for Mt. Ararat.
Brewer 8, Oxford Hills 3
PARIS — Sydney Hews belted a two-run double in the sixth as Brewer pulled away to record an 8-3 win of Oxford Hills Wednesday in MVC softball action.
Emily Lord, Delaney Davis, Sam Pellegrino and Cassy Green all had multiple hits for the Witches in a well-balanced attack.
The Vikings (9-3) were paced by Anna Piirainen with three hits and two RBIs, while Cody Akers belted an RBI double.
Hampden 7, Lewiston 6
LEWISTON — Brooklyn Scott belted an RBI single in the seventh inning to give Hampden a 7-6 win of Lewiston in KVAC softball action Wednesday.
The Blue Devils (0-12) led 5-4 after five frames before Hampden (3-9) knocked in the go-ahead run in the sixth. Emily Mousseau led Lewiston with two hits and two RBIs, while Jordan Mynahan belted out three hits.
Julia Sicard gave up 10 hits in seven innings of work to notch the win, while Megan Theriault suffered her fourth loss of 2015.
Telstar 14, Winthrop 0
BETHEL — Olivia York struck out eight batters and didn’t walk a soul Wednesday as Telstar shut down Winthrop, 14-0, in a late-season MVC softball tilt.
Ashley Savage led Jim Lunney’s Rebels (10-2) with three hits, while York helped her own cause with two hits. Lisa Gammon also contributed with two hits in the contest. Vanessa Godwin belted a two-run single in the four-run second frame.
Molly Mazur went the distance for the struggling Ramblers (1-9) and suffered the loss.
Cony 12, Mt. Blue 4
FARMINGTON — Jaine Coull had three hits as Cony engaged the afterburners in the late innings for a 12-4 triumph over Mt. Blue in KVAC softball action Wednesday afternoon.
The Rams (8-3) broke open a tied game in the fifth inning with RBI singles from Delaney Keithley and Catherine Silva. Cony followed three fifth-inning runs with another four in the sixth.
Addie Brinkman had three singles, while Rachelle Bator added two singles and three RBIs for the Cougars (4-8).
Carrabec 6, Lisbon 5
NORTH ANSON — Freshman catcher Bailey Dunphy belted four hits, including a triple, to lead Carrabec to a 6-5 victory over Lisbon in MVC softball action Wednesday afternoon.
The Greyhounds (5-6) scored early with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. Molly Nicholson collected a double, while Ali Sult plated two runs with a ground ball out and a single for Lisbon.
Freshman pitcher Sam LeBeau allowed just four hits and fanned seven batters for the Cobras (8-4). Kilee Nile contributed two singles and scored a run in the winning effort.
Mountain Valley 4, Oak Hill 2
WALES — Karen Flaherty keyed a three-run fifth inning for Mountain Valley with a pair of runs batted in as the Falcons escaped Oak Hill with a 4-2 win in MVC softball action Wednesday.
Flaherty finished with a single and a double on the afternoon, while Emily Laubauskas scattered four hits and allowed only two runs to earn the win from the circle.
Makayla Nadeau was the losing pitcher for the Raiders (8-4), though she only allowed six hits. The Falcons (4-6) took advantage of four Oak Hill errors.
Richmond 6, Buckfield 1
BUCKFIELD — Catcher Sydney Tilton doubled and tripled and winning pitcher Meranda Martin stood her ground, allowing Richmond to march off with a 6-1 victory over Buckfield in a softball game Wednesday.
The Bobcats (10-0) built a 6-0 lead after four innings.
For Buckfield, losing pitcher Amber Arsenault had two hits and Courtney Lowell doubled.
Girls’ lacrosse
Morse 14, Oxford Hills 6
BATH — Paige Daigle netted five goals to lead Morse to a 14-6 rout of Oxford Hills in a girls’ lacrosse tilt Wednesday.
Sophie Sreden and Noa Sreden chipped in for the Shipbuilders (5-3) with three goals apiece, while single tallies by Bronwyn Morissette, Maddi Olsen and Taylor Gagnon completed the scoring.
The Vikings (2-6) were paced by Amber Jenkins with a hat trick, while Ally Hanley added to goals.
