LEWISTON — A guitar made by Bourgeois Guitars of 7 Cedar St. was in the hands of 16-year-old Sawyer Fredericks on Tuesday night when he won the popular NBC talent show “The Voice.”

The connection was former Hartford resident and singer-songwriter Ray LaMontagne, according to Mainebiz.

When the guitar company found out LaMontagne was one of Fredericks’ idols, it reached out to Fredericks’ mother through Facebook and offered a handmade guitar from the company’s Ray LaMontagne Signature Series, according to CEO John Karp.

The series was conceived by LaMontagne and company owner Dana Bourgeois in 2010 and is limited to 33 LaMontagne-signed guitars, according to Mainebiz.

“The fact that Ray is a player and endorser of our guitars immediately got through to Sawyer,” Karp told the publication. “He is a huge fan of Ray LaMontagne.”

LaMontagne also wrote a song for Fredericks to sing on the program, which he did during the last week of the competition.

The publicity has resulted in thousands of visitors to the company’s website, according to Karp.

Other well-known musicians who have played Bourgeois guitars include Ricky Skaggs, Brad Paisley and Tim McGraw.
