LISBON — Superintendent Richard Greene told the School Committee on Tuesday night that he needs more time to find nearly $400,000 in cuts to the 2015-16 budget.

Green said there isn’t enough time to do that before the budget vote Tuesday, June 9.

The Town Council approved a $15.1 million budget last week, necessitating cutting $399,610 from the proposed spending plan. The council told the committee in January to cut $600,000 from the $1.11 million proposed additional funds account.

Green said the School Committee isn’t required to adjust the budget articles before the vote, “because the community is voting on the bottom line.” There are several positions that have yet to be filled that could be looked at as a place to make some cuts, he said. The public doesn’t want cuts to student services, he said.

Committee member Gina Mason said she would like to see the committee have a workshop and look at everything. She suggested areas such as a pay-to-play system for sports and other extracurricular activities.

“Do we need a late bus?” Mason asked.

She also asked the committee to look at administration, grounds maintenance and the adult education program.

Other committee members said some of those items have outside funding so it wouldn’t help reduce the budget.

The $15.1 million budget will go before voters at the polls June 9. Also on the warrant are questions asking voters who vote no if they think budget was too high or too low. Although the question won’t change the outcome of the vote, the answers will help councilors and committee members be better informed for future budgets.
