WILTON — Lightning struck a fir tree, toppling it onto a garage and setting it on fire Wednesday evening on Pine Brook Road.

The lightning bolt struck at about 7:30 p.m., fire Chief Sonny Dunham said. The approximately 24- by 18-foot garage was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived, he said.

The home was saved but the siding on one side melted and will need to be replaced.

The owner, whose name was unavailable, had all of his tools stored in the garage. There was no insurance on the building, Dunham said.

About 14 firefighters responded to the call. Mutual aid was not needed.

Pine Brook Road is a dead-end dirt road off Route 156.
