PORTLAND – An Auburn teenager and two passengers escaped injury Friday night when the car they were riding in crashed on the turnpike and ended up in a marsh at the bottom of a hill, state police said.
Katherinr McDonough, 18, was headed south on I-95 at about 6:45 p.m. when she crashed while trying to pass an SUV, Maine State Police Trooper Matt Griffin said. McDonough was driving in the right lane and attempting to pass when she lost control of the car. Her Nissan clipped a Chevrolet driven by Richard Jensen, 51, of Lewiston, police said, forcing Jensen’s vehicle into the meridian.
McDonough’s car skidded out of control, police said, sliding down an embankment and into a marsh.
McDonough and her two passengers, each wearing seat belts, escaped without injury. Jensen complained of pain at the scene but declined medical treatment.
Police said no charges are expected to be filed. State police were interviewing the occupants of each vehicle as their investigation got underway.
