SABATTUS — Selectmen on Tuesday evening urged residents to attend the Regional School Unit 4 budget meeting at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 3, at Oak Hill High School.

Selectman Jeff Baril said voters will have an opportunity to express their opinions on the $18.82 million proposal. Sixty-five percent of local taxes go toward education costs, he said.

The budget for 2015-16 is $705,084 more than this fiscal year that ends June 30. It means an increase of $115,179 for the town’s share.

A vote on the budget will be held from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 9, at the Town Hall.

In other business, selectmen approved spending $200 for annual dues for the Plymouth County Co-op. The membership will allow the town to access the lowest price for a new 2015 Dodge Charger police cruiser. Voters approved the purchase at town meeting last month.

Police Chief Tony Ward said the cruiser is equipped with accessories such as a backup camera and wireless communication.

Board of Selectmen Chairman Mark Duquette said the membership “will save money and help out the taxpayers,” and allow the purchase sooner than expected.

In a 2-1 vote, selectmen approved using town vehicles and equipment to fill swimming pools as a way to raise money for the Fire Association. The money will be used for equipment and scholarships, and help needy families.

The practice was rejected in the past because of potential damage to equipment and the administrative costs for billing.

The board denied allowing town vehicles and equipment for chimney cleaning because of the risk of personal injury.

Three tax-acquired properties may be sold at public auction if resolutions can’t be reached with owners, Town Manager Andrew Gilmore said.

“The town has gone above and beyond and has practiced due diligence” to resolve the cases, he said.

The properties are 104F Sanborn Road, 65 Depot Street and Emily Drive.

Selectmen said they are pleased retired Androscoggin County Sheriff Guy Desjardins has been appointed to the county Budget Committee. They said his past experience with the county budget is valuable.

A fishing derby for children in grades kindergarten through fifth grade will be held from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday, June 13, at Martin Point on Sabattus Pond. Prizes and gifts will be given to participants. Fishing permits are not necessary for children.

The Town Hall will be closed Tuesday, June 30, to allow employees to close the books for the fiscal year.
