MINOT — Richard Sprague, 58, of Minot, died Saturday night after he lost control of his 2004 Harley-Davidson motorcycle on Center Minot Hill Road at about 8:45 p.m.

Witnesses said Sprague passed several cars and then lost control, skidded and went off the road and into the woods, according to Maine State Police trooper Nathan Jamo.

He was not wearing a helmet and struck his head “most likely” on the pavement or on a tree when he fell off the bike, Jamo said. The dark, narrow and winding road in that area has a posted speed limit of 45 mph.

Sprague’s daughter was notified of the crash, Jamo said, adding that Sprague had no apparent family ties in the area.
