WEST PARIS — Two residents were left without a home or belongings after a fire destroyed the interior of a mobile home Monday afternoon. There were no injuries, an official said.
The fire at 1 Knothole Road left the trailer standing but the inside blackened and a complete loss, West Paris Fire Department Capt. Troy Billings said. The structure likely will have to be torn down, he said.
Billings said Monday evening that a state fire marshal found the fire was accidental, originating around a stove in the kitchen. There were no injuries.
At least 30 firefighters from West Paris, Paris, Norway, Woodstock, Greenwood and Sumner responded to the home after a passer-by noticed smoke coming from the home around 2:30 p.m.
Knothole Road is a dead-end way off Route 219 west of the village.
Billings said the tenants, identified as 24-year old Rick Bovino Jr. and Kassandra Wilson, were not home at the time of the blaze.
Billings said firefighters were able to get the fire quickly under control.
Bovino, who said he was on scene shortly before crews arrived, said he left the building for 45 minutes to run errands in Paris. When he returned, he found the home full of smoke, though he could see no flames. A pet dog was outside at the time and unhurt.
Bovino said he did not have renter’s insurance. He had found a place to sleep that evening, but had little more than $50 to his name, he said. Most of the belongings inside were either destroyed or not salvageable because of the smoke.
The American Red Cross was contacted about emergency aid.
“Times are tough,” Bovino said.
