MINOT — After a discussion concerning the County Commissioners’ pending vote to amend the new county charter, selectmen agreed on Monday to attend the meeting on Wednesday, June 10, to further discuss taking legal action against the commissioners.

Lewiston City Administrator Ed Barrett has called for a meeting of decision makers from Androscoggin County’s 14 municipalities to decide whether to challenge the commissioners’ proposed November vote to amend the charter by giving the county budget committee control over the commissioners’ salaries and benefits.

Minot selectmen, along with elected officials in several other county towns, believe the commissioners’ amendment is too narrow and that the original intent of the new charter gave the county budget committee the power, by a supermajority vote, to set the entire county budget.

Selectmen Lisa Cesare and Eda Tripp said they planned to attend Barrett’s meeting, scheduled for 6 p.m. at Lewiston City Hall. Town Administrator Arlan Saunders said he had a meeting in Auburn at 5:30 p.m. and plans to go over to Lewiston after his meeting concludes.

Selectmen also met with Community Club representative Diane Sullivan to discuss the Community Club’s request to install a number of 4-by-4-inch posts at points on the town’s hiking trail system. Storyboards will be placed on them, as well as boxes to hold laminated pages and books pertaining to the environment.

Selectmen agreed to permit the Community Club to install the posts and storyboards, with the provison that the Community Club dutifully maintain them.

Saunders noted that the paving bids are due back for the board’s June 22 meeting, and that bids put out by the Recreation Committee for work on the multi-purpose/soccer field are also due to be opened at that meeting.

Selectman Dan Gilpatric noted that 30 cubic yards of wood mulch is needed at the field for erosion control and needs to be in place prior to work on the field.

Saunders said the Highway Department will haul in the mulch by next week.

Selectmen reviewed bids from three companies that responded to the town’s request for culverts: Paris Farmers Union was awarded the bid at a price of $3,402. W.H. Shurtleff bid $3,574.80 and Ferguson Water Works bid $3,644.40.

Selectmen requested that Saunders also send a thank-you letter to Nick Santos for the estimated more than 20 bat houses, that he has installed at the town’s ball fields. Santos undertook the project as part of his Eagle Scout requirements.

Selectmen also noted that Evan Gallagher will be constructing the 11-by-11-foot sand building this weekend for his Eagle Scout project and requested that Saunders convey their thanks once the building is completed.

Saunders also reported that he received a permit from the State Fire Marshall’s office for the additions to the Orchard and Central fire stations.

Selectman Eda Tripp reported that there are 27 unpaid 2013 tax bills and 106 for 2014. Outstanding taxes total $158,312.
