LEWISTON — With new leadership in place and an economic development strategy being developed, the Lewiston-Auburn Economic Growth Council could begin working on a new marketing strategy for the region later this year.

“We intend to begin reviewing our brand and logos and freshen that up,” John Holden, president of the Growth Council, told Lewiston councilors Tuesday night.

Holden said the Growth Council will work with Androscoggin County Chamber of Commerce and the Regional Image Committee to come up with a new campaign.

“Basically, we need to get it done and use reports done as recently as 2013 on regional image,” he said. “We hope to do that work with our committee and with the community to establish that brand and work with the cities.”

The Growth Council, the chamber and the regional image committee had kicked off an effort to design a campaign to replace the popular “It’s Happening Here” effort in 2012 and 2013.

City officials from Lewiston and Auburn worked out a new scope of services with the Growth Council’s board last summer. Overall, the new agreement called for making the Growth Council more nimble and modern, focusing on building L-A’s workforce and finding new nongovernment dependent funding while recognizing the existing projects and partners already in place.

The first job was hiring a new manager, a replacement for outgoing President Lucien Gosselin. The Growth Council hit that goal in January, hiring Holden as president.

Since then, the job has been to create a new operational strategy for the Growth Council. Holden has hosted meetings this spring around the community to gauge residents’ needs and wants, and the Growth Council is writing the strategy now, he said.

“I suspect a June-July kind of version-one draft,” he said. “We’ll work with our board and come back with a draft for you to review in August or September.”
