NORWAY — Fireworks have been banned in Norway.
Starting Wednesday, June 10, consumer fireworks are banned in Norway except with a special permit after voters agreed with the citizen’s petition on a 214 to 156 vote at Tuesday’s annual town election.
The vote means that anyone using, possessing with the intent to use or selling fireworks can be summoned to court by the town and can face penalties of not less than $200 and not more than $400. Subsequent offenses carry fines of $300 to $600 per violation.
Earlier this year, selectmen agreed to place the citizens’ petition presented by Nancy Hohmann of 420 Crockett Ridge Road, and signed by 423 registered voters, on the annual town election ballot.
Fireworks have been an occasional problem over the years, especially in the Lake Pennesseewassee area. Police Chief Robert Federico said there were nine complaints of disruptive fireworks since June of last year — including three on July 4, 2014 — and only one this calendar year.
In other election news, Selectman Russ Newcomb won re-election to the seat he has held for five terms with 320 votes over write-in opponent Gary Howe, who had 15 votes.
“I just want to thank the voters for giving me another three years,” said Newcomb, who added he looks forward to continuing to serve the residents of Norway as selectman.
In a race for two seats on the School Administrative District 17 Board of Directors, incumbents Jared Cash and Stephen Cummings defended against political newcomer Michael R. Marshall with 222 votes for Cash, 257 for Cummings and 148 for Marshall.
“Our children are our most precious resource, and they deserve our commitment to their futures. We must do more to improve their schools,” Cash said. “I’m appreciative to get the nod from my neighbors and community friends. I will dedicate my board energy to ensuring that district decisions and actions align with our newly enacted five-year strategic plan. We have miles to go, and engagement with our community and parents will be crucial to our success.”
Cummings was unavailable for comment.
Fire Chief Dennis Yates, who was first elected in 2009, won another term as chief with 365 votes.
Incumbent Cynthia Reedy, with 359 votes, and write-in candidate Michael Vandemark, with 11 write-in votes, won seats on the Norway Memorial Library Board of Trustees.
