LEWISTON — World Refugee Day will be celebrated in Lewiston-Auburn on Tuesday, June 16, with a ceremony and tour that highlights the contributions refugees and immigrant entrepreneurs have made to economic development in the Twin Cities.
The event will be from 4 to 6 p.m. starting at the Lewiston Public Library, 200 Lisbon St. Refugee business owners will share their stories. Local volunteers will then lead a short tour of businesses.
Interpreters will be available in English, Somali, Arabic and French. The event is organized by a coalition of community partners, including local government agencies and nonprofit organizations.
Lewiston-Auburn’s event follows a similar World Refugee Day Festival in Portland scheduled 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday, June 13, at Deering Oaks Park. In case of rain it will be held at 70 Forest Ave. The festival will feature performances by dance groups, singers and other artists to showcase the culture that refugees bring to the community.
According to organizers, refugees and immigrant entrepreneurs are credited with significant contributions to the economic development of many U.S. cities, including L-A. Between 2000 and 2013, immigrants accounted for 48 percent of overall growth of business ownership in the United States, while nationally immigrants make up 28 percent of Main Street business owners, organizers say.
