KINGFIELD — The Board of Selectmen on Monday reviewed a schedule of meetings to discuss and vote on whether to begin the process of withdrawing from Regional School Unit 58.

The Kingfield Independent School Choice committee, an informal group which has met over the past three years, started the process and selectmen agreed to have the committee share its findings. That will occur at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 25, at Webster Hall.

Administrative Assistant Leanna Targett said Monday that many residents are concerned they will have to make a decision before they understand the issues. She sent a letter to residents detailing the steps that the town must take before making any commitment to leave the district, which includes Avon, Phillips and Strong.

Selectmen have scheduled a required public hearing for Monday, July 6.

“People may have questions we can find answers to before the public hearing,” Board of Selectmen Chairman Heather Moody said.

On July 16 , voters will choose whether to appoint a committee to continue the 22-step process mandated by the Maine Department of Education.

In other matters Monday, Targett updated selectmen on the broken frame on a one-ton truck. She sent a letter to the Hight dealership in Skowhegan and she received a reply from the service manager. He has contacted General Motors, which agreed to pay 60 percent of the repair costs. Since the public works department needed the truck repaired soon, selectmen agreed to pursue that option.

“$3,800 is a lot better than $10,000,” Selectman Wade Browne said.

Selectmen announced that several volunteers have contacted Targett to serve on the newly-revived Recreation Department.

“We have several people who want to be on the rec board, and I think that’s fabulous,” Moody said.
