(Editorial) The economic news for the twin city area definitely is the brightest in terms of total employment since records have been kept by the Maine Employment Security Commission. The figures for unemployment compensation are the lowest seen at the Lewiston office of the MESC in many years. MESC manager of the local office Paul E. Belanger noted that claims last week numbered 1,016 as contrasted to 1,688 the same week in 1964. This represents a reduction of approximately one-third. The number of individuals on unemployment compensation is a statistic which reflects the general state of the economy in an area. A $90.000 cut in federal and state funds passed on from the Lewiston-Auburn Transit Committee to Western Maine Transportation Services Wednesday will severely limit rural access to the Twin Cities and curtail services to elderly and handicapped citizens within the cities, WMTS’ director said Friday. Eugene Skibitsky said the cut — which comprises approximately 25 percent of WMTS’ Lewiston-Auburn operating budget — will probably mean three of eight WMTS buses used to transport residents within the Twin Cities or bring people into Lewiston-Auburn from the Rumford, Mexico and South Paris areas and the Farmington, Livermore Falls, and Wilton areas, will have to be retired next fall.
