WESTBROOK — A fire that swept through a two-unit home in Westbrook late Friday night left a woman in critical condition.
Madelena DuDu Kassa, 51, was being treated in the Critical Care Unit at a Portland hospital for life-threatening burns before she was transferred by helicopter to a Boston hospital.
Fire marshals said the fire started in the kitchen of the first-floor unit, according to a news release from Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland.
A cooking fire got out of control, he said.
Also living on the first floor were James Kassa, 59, Cliff Kassa, 30, and Emanual Kassa, 20. All escaped uninjured.
On the second floor were Ghassan Abdaullah, 40, and Ghassak Abdaullah, 14. Both were uninjured. Shymma Abdaullah, 37, and Alak Abdaullah, 13, were treated at a Portland hospital for smoke inhalation and were discharged. Mohammed Abdaullah, 10, and Mohiman Abdaullah, 6, were uninjured.
At the time of the fire, Ghassan Abdaullah’s brother, identified as Abdullah Abdaullah, 30, of 43 East Valentine St., Westbrook, was visiting the Abdaullah family and taking a shower. He was treated for smoke inhalation and discharged.
The owner of the building is Memana Abraham of South Portland.
Smoke alarms activated on the second floor. Investigators are trying to determine whether they went off on the first floor, McCausland said.
