LEWISTON — John Butler Jr. announces he’s running for the at-large seat on the School Committee.

Butler has spent years serving on committees to help Lewiston students. He served for 16 years on the School Committee, four years on the City Council and is on the Franklin Pasture Complex Committee.

Butler also served on the redistricting and site committee for the new school that will be built in Lewiston, as well as the former Geiger and Farwell school building committees. He served on the Maine Department of Education Safe and Drug Free School Task Force and is a past regional director of the Maine School Board Association.

In a news release, Butler said he’s committed to a quality education for all students while keeping property taxes reasonable. He said he’s looking forward to the new school that will help Martel and Longley students, as well as students now in other overcrowded schools.

A lifelong resident of Lewiston, he is married to Ann, is the father of grown three children who have gone through Lewiston schools, and the grandfather of three, including one granddaughter who attends Montello Elementary School.

“With my knowledge and experience in education, I will work very hard to give every student the best education possible and to keep all of our students safe,” Butler said. “This is what they deserve and I promise to do that.”

All of Lewiston’s elected positions are up this November, including the mayor, seven city councilors and eight School Committee members.

Lewiston’s election cycle kicks off July 6. Candidates can begin circulating nomination petitions then and need to complete and return them to the City Clerk’s office by Sept. 4 to receive a spot on the ballot.
