CARTHAGE — By a tally of 85-15, voters Tuesday approved joining Dixfield, Canton and Peru in petitioning Regional School Unit 10 for withdrawal.

To fund the process, they voted to spend $8,000 from surplus.

The four towns have voted to form a four-person committee to work on withdrawal negotiations and to appropriate money to fund the cost of negotiations, research and analysis of withdrawal agreements.

Town Clerk Linda Berry said she was surprised at what she called one of the higher voter turnouts in Carthage’s history.

“If people are passionate about something, they will come out in large numbers,” she said. “We’ve had more of a turnout today than for the primaries. We’ve had people in here voting that we haven’t seen in a long time.”

Berry said Carthage has roughly 350 registered voters. By 4 p.m., with four more hours remaining, 72 people had been in to vote.
